The Jamaica Food & Drink Festival Highlights Vibrant Culinary Scene in Kingston

In October 2017, I was invited to attend the Jamaican Food & Drink Festival in Kingston, Jamaica. For over a week, the vibrant culinary scene was celebrated at the Jamaican Food & Drink Festival which took place from October 21 to 29 with seven world class food events at seven iconic venues around Kingston. More than 45 talented chefs participated and cooked at this multi-location festival, highlighting local ingredients and Jamaican cuisine. I traveled to Kingston, Jamaica for my first time. Lucky for me, Delta Air Lines had a direct flight from Atlanta to Kingston, so it was an easy trip to make. The first two festival events were Porkpalooza and Chopstix, which took place before I was able to travel. I did attend the last 3 days of the festival to experience Crisp, Picante and Meet Street & The Market events. These were all delicious culinary experiences, showcasing the fusion of diverse cultures and the deep roots of food in Jamaica. From the flavorful food to the fun vibe of each event, the drinks …

First Kamayan Filipino Feast In Orlando

The Kamayan Filipino feast was the first of its kind in a public dinner setting in Orlando, FL. Kamayan is the traditional practice of eating Filipino food with your bare hands and usually practiced at home. We wanted to bring that experience for people to try while discovering Filipino cuisine. Over 40 seats were sold to this ticketed dinner event at the East End Market, taking place upstairs at the event hall and demonstration kitchen. The special pop-up dinner was definitely a collaborative event and took a group who was passionate about Filipino cuisine and culture to make it happen. The trifecta from Kappo at East End Market, Francis Biondi (FOX’s MasterChef Season 5), Jami of FilipinoDinner.com, Jonjie Sibayan and crew from Pao Cafe in Tampa, and myself, all pitched in to make it happen.   (click image to enlarge) Green banana leaves were freshly cut the morning of the event, cleaned up, then were placed as the tablesetting for the dinner. The food was presented in a style where the centerpiece was a variety …

Chef Andy Bates’ “British Invasion” Pop Up Dinner In Orlando

Chef Andy Bates from the United Kingdom visited Orlando and collaborated to create a “British Invasion” Pop Up Dinner with Al Ruiz of local food truck, Sushi & Seoul on the Roll. Andy Bates is a celebrity chef for Food Network UK and is the host of Andy Bates Street Feasts, a show discovering street food and the stories behind the food. Hanson, the popular music band from the 90’s, has created their own Mmmhops Pale Ale beer and debuted it at this year’s 2014 Epcot Food & Wine Festival. The craft beer is named after their hit song, “MMMBop” and is brewed at their Hanson Brothers Beer Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is the first time Mmmhops is available in Florida and the craft beer can be found at the Epcot’s Festival Center. Hanson recently presented Mmmhops at a beverage seminar at the Festival Center to an excited crowd of fans.   (click image to enlarge) The beverage seminar was a talk on how the brothers came up with the beer idea and how they designed this beer to be an introduction to drinking a hoppy beer. The goal was to make it a drinkable full bodied beer with a hoppy flavor, but not go overboard with a hoppy bitter flavor. They were very knowledgable talking about craft beers and brewing, dropping some beer knowledge to the crowd, while keeping it entertaining for the fans. An …
