Droolius’ Top 25 Food & Most Memorable Meals In 2014

In 2014 I spent a lot of time traveling and discovering food around the U.S. and internationally to the Philippines and Japan. This culinary travel has led me to find new food around the globe and in keeping with tradition, I’m sharing my best food memories in 2014. My two previous lists, Top 25 Most Memorable Food in 2012 and Top 25 Food & Most Memorable Meals in 2013, were focused on East coast U.S. destinations, with some West coast and a few international trips in North America. For my Top 25 of 2014, it was challenging to decide the top food because there were so many exceptional things that I ate while traveling for six weeks in Asia, with more West coast trips this year and traveling around the Southeast of United States. There were many close seconds, but I finally narrowed down my favorites for 2014. Note: Photos are in the order of when the food was eaten, not by rank.   (click image to enlarge) • Pork Belly with CornBread, Pickled Apple, …

Chef Andy Bates’ “British Invasion” Pop Up Dinner In Orlando

Chef Andy Bates from the United Kingdom visited Orlando and collaborated to create a “British Invasion” Pop Up Dinner with Al Ruiz of local food truck, Sushi & Seoul on the Roll. Chef Bates prepared a few proper English treats that evening to give us a taste of good British pub food. The ticketed pop-up dinner took place back in November at Redlight Redlight Beer Parlour in Orlando’s Audubon Park Garden District. Andy Bates is a celebrity chef for Food Network UK and is the host of Andy Bates Street Feasts, a show discovering street food and the stories behind the food. The connection of Chef Bates and Al of Sushi & Seoul food truck comes from an episode they filmed together for the show, Andy Bates American Street Feasts, for Food Network UK. They have been pals ever since and joined forces to put together this special event on Andy’s return visit to Orlando.   (click image to enlarge) The “British Invasion” menu – 1/2 Scotch Egg, Cheese & Onion Pie and a Rare …

Donut King Is Serving Cronuts

I went to the original Donut King in Minneola, FL recently and discovered they are now serving Cronuts. The croissant and donut hybrid is still largely popular and many donut shops across the country are creating their own versions. Donut King’s version of the Cronut is probably one of the better ones I have eaten this year and it comes in a glazed version and also a cinnamon & sugar.   (click image to enlarge) The Donut King Cronut has the croissant layers and more importantly it has its pillowy soft yeast donut texture inside that I enjoy so much. Many Cronuts I’ve eaten are more croissant-like with layers, but have less of a donut interior texture. Donut King’s version still has the donut interior with a croissant like exterior. The Cronut here also has a buttery flavor that I picked up on when eating the Cinnamon & Sugar flavor.   (click image to enlarge) Glazed Cronut The glazed version is a little sweeter and although I thought I would like this one more, the …

Tonight’s Knife Fight on Esquire Network

Earlier this year back in February, I was part of the audience for a t.v. show filming called Knife Fight which airs on Esquire Network. I did not cook in the competition, but I did get to taste a dish on camera. I was basically in the crowd cheering on two chefs who were competing in an underground chef battle, with no prizes to be won, but for bragging rights to see who cooked the best dishes. There are a few secret ingredients, a few rules, and it’s hosted by Ilan Hall at his restaurant, The Gorbals, in downtown Los Angeles. What makes this show fun to watch is that they cook in front of a live audience (insert myself and my friend @Limer35) that is encouraged to be loud, get rowdy, and scream for your favorite chef. The chefs only have one hour to cook, there’s no retakes or extra time to finish. Once time is up, there are three judges who judge the food, discuss, and pick a winner. Your host and resident …

World Food Championships 2013 Debuts On FYI Network

Back in November 2013 I got a chance to work as a photographer for the World Food Championships in Las Vegas. The event is a cooking competition where chefs and home cooks compete against each other in various food categories. This was all filmed and the show will be debuting tonight at 10pm, the “World Food Championships” reality series on A+E Networks’ new FYI network (formerly BIO). You’ll see some familiar food television chefs, cooks, and personalities hosting each segment. I can’t give too much away, but you may see some local Central Florida food talent competing in some of the categories (and possibly me snapping photos in the background).   (click image to enlarge) The World Food Championships took place in downtown Las Vegas in the Fremont Street District. A section was dedicated to cooking competitors creating their dishes to turn in and a stage was used for cooking demonstrations and to announce winners.   (click image to enlarge) The live-event competition had 300 competitors from around the world battling for the title of “World …

My First Shake Shack Experience in 2010 #ThowbackThursday

I thought I’d share my first experience at Shake Shack as a “Throwback Thursday” post since today marks the 10 year Anniversary for Shake Shack as a company. The “Decade of Shack” celebration has been going on all week with chef collaboration burgers, along with a special event today at the original Madison Square Park location with several bands playing live music, Dominique Ansel birthday cake, Brooklyn Brewery Shack X IPA beer and a “pay what you’d like” Hot Dog Cart. These guys know how to throw a party! All of this week I have been wishing I could be in NYC eating all of those specialty burgers. So about my first Shake Shack experience, it was back on July 31, 2010 in the South Beach location in Miami’s Lincoln Road district. I was with my food partner OD and we were excited to try this burger spot our friends kept telling us about. On this first trip to Shake Shack I went basic and ordered a ShackBurger, cheese fries, Shack-cago Dog, Peanut butter Shake …

Doughnut Guide To Celebrate National Doughnut Day 2014 Around The U.S.

Happy National Doughnut Day 2014! This is probably my favorite food holiday in the United States of America and I’ve spent some times traveling over the last year to add to the Droolius Donut Guide. Check out the doughnut shops below for the greater Orlando area, South Florida, Tampa, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, and NYC. Share the doughnut love with your friends and send them this food guide. Central Florida   (click image to enlarge) My favorite glazed and Hot Glazed doughnuts are at Donut King. These are some of the best glazed doughnuts I’ve had compared to others around the U.S. They are just a great classic doughnut. Other good ones to try are strawberry glazed (pink frosting above) and red velvet cake donut (not pictured). The Maple Bacon Donut Bar (not pictured) is a great pick too and if you don’t see it, just ask them to add bacon on top of the maple donut or maple bar.
