Droolius’ Top 25 Food & Most Memorable Meals in 2015

Keeping up with my yearly tradition, this is my Top 25 list of food and most memorable meals in 2015. The year flew by and switching from freelance work to being in the office definitely was a change for me and limited my time for culinary travel. I was still able to travel a little, visiting Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Miami, along with my first trip to Ireland. My trip to the Philippines was a short one for a family emergency. Regardless, I made the best of each travel opportunity and my favorite meals are listed below. Note: Photos are in the order of when the food was eaten, not by rank.   (click image to enlarge) • Chicken & Waffle Plate with sweet potato waffles, miso butter, maple syrup, and 2 pieces of fried chicken (safe & spicy heat) + side of Kimchi Coleslaw at Bad Bird, Hole in the Wall, Century Mall in Makati, Philippines. It’s great to see new restaurants and food concepts open up in the Philippines. One of the places …

Droolius 5 Year Blog Anniversary

It’s hard to believe that I started this food blog five years ago and it has been quite the experience in eating food, traveling for food, and learning about food in different cultures. From watching subtitled episodes of Iron Chef in Japan to various cooking shows and chef competitions, I’ve been able to discover the food I’ve seen on TV, travel to some of the destinations, and even meet some of my food heroes (that sounds like a future blog post). I’m very thankful for where this blog has taken me and I always celebrate every blog anniversary with food. To continue my yearly tradition I wanted something that I have not done in the past. I needed five of some type of food that would look great in a photo and something we would enjoy eating. So here’s what I came up with: five scoops of gelato stacked high. The results were better than what I imagined. Plus, it’s something fun to celebrate my actual birthday!   click to enlarge Celebrating in this unique …

Droolius.com back up and running…

For a little over a week Droolius.com has been down due to database issues in WordPress. There were issues I could not fix because I was busy at work (started a new job in the social media marketing industry recently) and I had very little time to diagnose the problem. After some trial and error, I finally found a fix this evening! So, the website is back up and lots of content to post from food events to restaurant discoveries are coming up. For now, enjoy this photo I took at lunch today. It’s the Shack Stack burger from Shake Shack in Winter Park, FL. You gotta love Florida winter days with bright sunshine and blue sky.   (click image to enlarge) Shack Stack burger at Shake Shack Winter Park – photo taken with iPhone 5s   Words and photos by Julius Mayo Jr. Content and photos © Droolius.com 2015

Disney Top 10 Gift Guide From New ChirashiBowl YouTube Channel

I’m excited to announce I’m working on a new video project called ChiarashiBowl. It’s a YouTube channel with original content and videos featuring food, lifestyle, theme parks, motorsports, product reviews, and more. I’m collaborating with my long time friend and videographer, TomimotoFilms, who has helped create a few videos here on Droolius in the past. Our first episode on ChirashiBowl is a “Disney Top 10 Gift Guide – Frozen, Star Wars, LEGO, Guardians and More!” for holiday shopping at Downtown Disney in Orlando, FL. Watch as we explore 10 different stores around Downtown Disney (to be eventually renamed Disney Springs) to find our “Top 10 Gifts” for this holiday season. We of course have some food in the video, eating some snacks like churros and finding an Olaf rice crispy treat. (Olaf is the snowman from Disney’s movie, Frozen) Watch the video below… Video: Please share and subscribe on YouTube   Direct link to video on YouTube: http://youtu.be/6DBh1W79PDw   We hope the video provides a good Disney gift guide as well as some entertainment value. …

One Year Later… Eating A Tuna On White, No Crust Sandwich In Honor Of Paul Walker

One year has passed since the world was shocked when actor, car guy, and humanitarian, Paul Walker passed away in a fatal automobile accident. Even today, it’s hard to believe that the tragic event happened a year ago and has left many fans of Paul Walker saddened (including myself). This especially had an impact on the fans of the movie series, The Fast & The Furious, and us car enthusiasts can only look ahead to see what will happen to Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor, for the seventh movie installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. Furious 7 will be released in April 2015. I wrote a blog post last year about eating a “Tuna on white, no crust” sandwich in honor of Paul Walker’s passing and continued the tradition this year.   (click image to enlarge) Today’s “Tuna on white, no crust” sandwich served with a pickle and cole slaw. I try to eat local as much as I can, but it’s actually hard to find a local restaurant that’s serves a tuna sandwich on …

Kamayan: A Filipino Feast On September 22 at East End Market in Orlando

Get ready to eat Filipino food at Kamayan: A Filipino Feast, a special dining event on September 22 in Orlando, FL. Kamayan is the Filipino traditional style of eating with your hands at a communal table, lined with banana leaves and the food is the center piece. The Kamayan feast will be prepared by Filipino chefs and cooks including the talented culinary team at Kappo at East End Market, Francis Biondi (FOX’s MasterChef Season 5 Top 15 Finalist), Jonjie Sibayan (chef/owner of PAO Truck/PAO Cafe in Tampa), and more. I’m proud to say that I am also participating in this event, doing some kitchen work and will be one of the front of the house hosting at the event. This first time Kamayan dinner is the first of it’s kind in Orlando (from what I know of) and is a collaboration of people who love to share Filipino food and want to share the experience and culture. Please join us on Monday, September 22 at the East End Market for a variety of food, drinks, …

Droolius 4 Year Blog Anniversary

Another year of food blogging is in the history books and today is the Droolius 4 year blog anniversary. Many things to be grateful for and I’ve enjoyed sharing my food travels with you all. Food and travel from L.A. to Manila to Tokyo, lots of food photos and travel stories to still share here. I’m always sharing the food on the @Droolius Instagram for daily updates, so find me there if there is a slow down on the blog. I celebrate every blogiversary with food and this year I wanted to make it even more epic. I went to one of my favorite places to eat, the new Shake Shack in Winter Park, and ordered what I call a “SmokeShack Quad Burger”:

My First Shake Shack Experience in 2010 #ThowbackThursday

I thought I’d share my first experience at Shake Shack as a “Throwback Thursday” post since today marks the 10 year Anniversary for Shake Shack as a company. The “Decade of Shack” celebration has been going on all week with chef collaboration burgers, along with a special event today at the original Madison Square Park location with several bands playing live music, Dominique Ansel birthday cake, Brooklyn Brewery Shack X IPA beer and a “pay what you’d like” Hot Dog Cart. These guys know how to throw a party! All of this week I have been wishing I could be in NYC eating all of those specialty burgers. So about my first Shake Shack experience, it was back on July 31, 2010 in the South Beach location in Miami’s Lincoln Road district. I was with my food partner OD and we were excited to try this burger spot our friends kept telling us about. On this first trip to Shake Shack I went basic and ordered a ShackBurger, cheese fries, Shack-cago Dog, Peanut butter Shake …

Droolius Travels: Eating My Way Through The Philippines and Japan

At the end of February I took an unexpected last minute trip to the Philippines. I ended up staying for one month, then two weeks in Japan. For six weeks I was unprepared, had no set plans, and basically planned a food journey day by day. The initial reason for the unplanned trip was unfortunately a family emergency in Manila. I spent some time with family and to make the best out of the situation, I decided to stay for a while and that’s the reason why I have not blogged in weeks. Sometimes you just have to embrace what life gives you and go with the flow.   (click image to enlarge) Since I left on such short notice, I pretty much had one day to plan before booking the flight with my family. I drove down to Miami Beach for the South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF coverage still in the works) to do some event photography work, then drove straight back to Orlando after, and flew out a few hours later. …

Tuna On White, No Crust – A Sandwich In Honor Of Paul Walker

I went to a few restaurants in the past week and ordered, “Tuna on white, no crust”. It may sound like a strange request, but I was asking for this sandwich in honor of the late actor, humanitarian, and all-around car guy, Paul Walker. It was a line from the movie The Fast and the Furious where his character Brian O’Connor orders “the tuna” in a memorable scene and introduces key characters into the Fast & Furious franchise. It’s one of those scenes I remember watching in the movie theater, excited to see the cars that my friends and I worked on. Our car culture, our lifestyle, our passion for cars was now on the “big screen” and Paul Walker was the ambassador to all of this.    (click image to enlarge) Before my life as a food photographer and blogger, my industry and life revolved around cars. I attended and photographed automotive lifestyle and racing events. Cars and traveling was my world from the late 1990’s to the late 2000’s, and food was always …
