Add more bacon, please! C&S Brisket Bus Pulled BBQ Sandwich – Photo of the Day

This past Friday I was really on a bacon kick. It’s not often that I will cook bacon at home for breakfast, then eat a donut topped with bacon, and then finish the day with dinner which includes more bacon. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw my plate featuring bacon, with fried eggs cooked in bacon drippings, and sauteed spinach. Then on my Foodspotting, I posted a maple bacon bar (donut) from Donut King. I completed my day with attending a food truck event and ordered a sandwich from the C&S Brisket Bus food truck. My order started with “Do you have any more bacon?” and “Which sandwich will it go best with?”. Luckily the Brisket Bus had a few pieces left of their house-cured bacon to serve on what they recommended, the Pulled BBQ sandwich. After a few minutes passed, out comes this beautiful BBQ Sandwich, with a few slabs of bacon just glistening at me. First I thought, “WOW” (the people behind me said WOW), and I then proceeded with a …

National Hot Dog Day 2012 – Shake Shack Shack-cago Dog – Photo of the Day

In case you missed it, today was National Hot Dog Day 2012. Tons of photos were uploaded online of this popular food item in America. I posted this photo of a Shake Shack Shack-cago Dog and it received many likes on both the Droolius Instagram and Facebook page. With such a good response, I figured it was worthy of a Photo of the Day here on the blog. Interesting fact: Shake Shack’s history says it “sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan.” I had no idea, I always assumed burgers, but Shake Shack knows hot dogs too.   (click image to enlarge) Shake Shack Shack-cago Dog – A Flat-Top dog, split and griddled crisp, with Rick’s Picks Shack relish, onion, cucumber, pickle, tomato, sport pepper, celery salt and mustard. The Shack-cago Dog is Shake Shack’s take on a classic Chicago style hot dog. It’s a good play on the Chicago style hot dog and hits all of the basic flavors with it’s toppings. Shake Shack is obviously famous for their …

Piggy Butter & Jelly: Filipino Pork Belly Mousse with mixed fruit jelly at Oblivion Taproom

I thought I’d switch things up today. Instead of a photo of the day Monday, let’s have a Dish of the Day Monday. Over the weekend I saw an update on Facebook from Oblivion Taproom announcing a Saturday special that was a secret on the menu, Piggy Butter & Jelly: Filipino Pork Belly Mousse with Grape, Strawberry, Passion Fruit Jelly. Well that sounds like it is calling my name, the best of all worlds for someone who loves PBJ sandwiches and all types of pork.   (click image to enlarge) Piggy Butter & Jelly: Filipino Pork Belly Mousse with Grape, Strawberry, Passion Fruit Jelly on wheat bread. Replacing peanut butter with a savory Filipino Pork Belly Mousse and pairing with a multiple combination of fruits in a housemade jelly was on point! Talk about savory, salty, spiced, and sweet… this sandwich had it all. The Pork Belly Mousse had a soft and smooth texture. The combined Grape, Strawberry, and Passion Fruit Jelly was chilled and sliced, full of fresh fruity flavors with a gentle sweetness. …

Cuban Roast Pork – Rincon Cubano Cafeteria – Photo of the Day Monday

Around East Orlando there are various Latin cuisine restaurants. Rincon Cubano Cafeteria is a Cuban restaurant that is found beside Full Sail University on Forsyth Road. I’ve passed this location many times without even stopping by, but it is a breakfast and lunch destination worth trying. I stopped in for lunch with a few friends after a meeting at the PXL Plus just down the street. Seems like they come here often for a coffee, breakfast or lunch, or sometimes all three in one day.   (click image to enlarge) Cuban Roast Pork with 2 sides, chick peas w/ sausage, boiled yuca. All plates are served with 2 side dishes. For my first trip here I had to try the Cuban Roast Pork. Slow roasted pork in spices and marinade, it was full of flavor and very moist. See that piece of pork skin? That was awesome. I had the crispy skin as my first bite and saved a little for my last bite. I could have had a few more pieces for sure. The …

SwedeDISH Food Truck – Swedish Meatballs – Photo of the Day

I went to the Food Truck Bazaar in Oviedo this past Sunday and finally was able to order the Swedish Meatballs from the SwedeDISH Food Truck. I lucked out by getting to the event early and was able to order this typically sold out dish. A must when trying to get your favorite food from a food truck at an event, arrive early to beat the lines. The monthly Oviedo Food Truck Bazaar is in a new location and was coordinated well by the TheDailyCity.com, with signs that were easy to spot from the street, directing attendees into the Lowe’s parking lot. The event was a success and I was happy to finally get my plate of SwedeDISH meatballs, a dish I missed out on during my first visit.   (click image to enlarge) Swedish Meatballs – Homemade Swedish lean ground beef meatballs with mashed potatoes, cream sauce, pickled gherkins & lingonberry jam (Svenska kottbullar med potatismos, inlagd gurka och lingonsylt) “Swedish meatballs are a traditional Scandinavian food. Croque Madame – Le Café De Paris – Orlando, FL – Photo of the Day

The first time I tried a Croque Madame was at Le Café De Paris in the Dr. Phillips neighborhood in Orlando, FL. I quickly became of a fan of this French classic, a variation of the croque-monsieur by adding the egg on top. The photo of the day is my first Croque Madame earlier this year. (click image to enlarge) Croque Madame – grilled ham, tomato, and cheese sandwich topped with egg The Croque Madame at Le Café De Paris was a perfect meal for a mid day brunch. I love how the egg oozes into the sandwich as you cut through and yolk spills on to each bite. Its almost like a comfort food, to be enjoyed on a sunny day eating al fresco or as a warm meal on a rainy or cold day. I actually ate this sitting outside in their outdoor seating area, a few tables available for customers. Le Café De Paris offers Croque Madame, Croque-Monsieur, and several other sandwiches. The menu has a variety of quiches and other French …

Tastebuds Catering – Ropa Vieja Tostones – Photo of the Day

Tastebuds Catering has become a regular at the food truck events serving their Latin American flare cuisine using local, fresh, and organic ingredients from the Winter Park Farmers Market. Dishes like quesadillas, empanadas, ropa vieja tostones, Venezuelan arepas and more, cover the menu at Food Pod and Food Truck Bazaar events. They also serve at the Winter Park Farmers Market every Saturday where you can order omelets or a breakfast special like the “hungry boy hash scrambled” lots of scramble eggs w/ ham, sausage, bacon, breakfast potatoes, topped with mozzarella cheese. Sounds like a lot of great food comes from this catering company and I got a chance to try them at a past Food Truck event. (click image to enlarge) Ropa Vieja Tostones: Crispy Green Plantain topped with Shredded Beef, Caribbean cheese, and House Pink Sauce The tender shredded beef has the classic Ropa Vieja flavors and placed on top of a crisp green plantain (Tostones) gives it a nice crunch and texture. Big Bruno’s Bites – Cheesesteak – Photo of the Day

Over the weekend I spent my time eating, as usual. The unusual part, however, was that I ate only once a day due to a busy schedule and it was late at night. On Saturday evening I checked the “Find Orlando Food Trucks” Droolius page and saw the food cart @BrunosBites say: “And L.A. Style bacon wrapped hotdogs peppers onions, Florida avocado, and salsa fresca!”. That sounded amazing to me, mainly because I have been thinking about L.A. food and I’ve been missing it. So I went to the Big Bruno’s Bites food cart that was set up in the patio of the Red Light Red Light bar, located on Bennett Rd. in Orlando, FL. It was my first visit to this food cart. The menu showed Cheesesteaks, Pork Roll egg & cheese, Hot Dogs, local Bratwurst, or Italian Sausage. Where was the L.A. Style bacon wrapped hotdogs? Oh, they sold out of them! (click image to enlarge) Big Bruno’s Cheesesteak, Jersey style The next best thing on the menu was the Cheese Steak, Jersey …

Sunset Ice – Mango Italian Ice – Photo of the Day

This past Sunday was a great day to be outside and eat at some Food Trucks. The army of Food Trucks in Central Florida came out to @theDailyCity Food Truck Bazaar at Fashion Square mall ready to serve the hungry crowds. The afternoon was hot, so to cool down you go to the Sunset Ice truck for some cold Italian Ice. Based out of Merritt Island, FL they make the trip to Orlando to serve their “8 fantastic flavors that are constantly changing” at the Food Truck Bazaar events. A perfect dessert, or in my case an appetizer, at this event. (click image to enlarge) Sunset Ice – Mango Italian Ice This mango ice is of my favorite things to eat at the Food Truck Bazaars. If you like fresh mango, this flavor is for you. I describe it as “Imagine pulverizing fresh mango and turning into ice, that’s what this tastes like.” Everyone seems to agree and enjoys it. It really does taste like fresh ripe mango, not like mango syrup. That’s because Sunset …

Coconut Chicken & Waffle at Melissa’s Chicken & Waffles – Photo of the Day

For the Fourth of July this year I celebrated by eating an American creation, chicken and waffles. Never heard of chicken and waffles as a meal or eaten it before? Google it and you will see that it is a classic combination in Soul Food and has roots in Southern cooking, which has spread out to restaurants all around the United States. Here in Orlando there is the Melissa’s Chicken & Waffles food truck, where you can get your classic chicken and waffles with gravy or a custom creation like the Coconut Chicken & Waffle pictured here. (click image to enlarge) Coconut Chicken & Waffle with sweet chili pineapple sauce – boneless chicken in homemade coconut batter with coconut flakes, deep fried, topped with sweet chili pineapple sauce served on waffle **contains almonds This was really a great twist on chicken and waffles. I enjoyed the light flavors of coconut and the textures of coconut flakes that were all fried together. The fried chicken is boneless with a slightly crunchy batter, but not heavy or …

Tree House Truck BearGrrr aka Luther Vandross Burger – Photo of the Day Monday

Sometimes there is an unexpected creation that is the best of both worlds. Take a bacon cheeseburger and replace the standard hamburger bun with 2 Krispy Kreme donuts, you get the infamous Luther Vandross burger. This amazing burger takes two popular food items and fuses it together into one crazy creation that packs flavor and calories. The burger was offered by the Tree House Truck, a popular food truck in the Orlando Food Truck scene. Nicknaming it the BearGrrr, the burger was featured as a special on the Tree House Truck menu and is now retired. I should say semi-retired because I’m sure if enough people ask for the burger, it will make an appearance in the future. (click image to enlarge) Tree House BearGrrr aka Luther Vandross Burger – Tree House Truck’s signature 13 spice burger, bacon, cheese, all between 2 Krispy Kreme donuts All I know is that it is a really great tasting burger and what makes it work is Tree House’s signature burger with 13 spices that compliments the sweetness of …

Deep Fried Peanut Butter & Jelly – TreeHouse Truck – Photo of the Day Monday

Everything seems to taste better deep fried. The TreeHouse Truck, which is based in Orlando, FL has a growing menu of deep fried items such as Oreos, Twinkies, & bread pudding. Now they have added an item which was very popular on its first day out, the deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich, topped with flambe bananas. (click image to enlarge) Deep Fried PB&J with flambe bananas I had one of these yesterday at the Treehouse Truck, who was parked serving brunch items at the Maitland Farmers Market. This was their first time at this location and passerbyers seem to connect with their new brunch style menu. (I will be writing up a blog post about this day & will post later.)  One of the items that everyone kept reading out loud was, “Peanut Butter & Straw Jelly Deep Fried… wow that sounds good.” I replied, “Its even better when you taste it!” There were many who ordered this deep fried concoction and they loved it. From adults to children, they were all nodding …
