Add more bacon, please! C&S Brisket Bus Pulled BBQ Sandwich – Photo of the Day

This past Friday I was really on a bacon kick. It’s not often that I will cook bacon at home for breakfast, then eat a donut topped with bacon, and then finish the day with dinner which includes more bacon. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw my plate featuring bacon, with fried eggs cooked in bacon drippings, and sauteed spinach. Then on my Foodspotting, I posted a maple bacon bar (donut) from Donut King. I completed my day with attending a food truck event and ordered a sandwich from the C&S Brisket Bus food truck. My order started with “Do you have any more bacon?” and “Which sandwich will it go best with?”. Luckily the Brisket Bus had a few pieces left of their house-cured bacon to serve on what they recommended, the Pulled BBQ sandwich. After a few minutes passed, out comes this beautiful BBQ Sandwich, with a few slabs of bacon just glistening at me. First I thought, “WOW” (the people behind me said WOW), and I then proceeded with a …

Food Truck Chefs Compete in Whole Foods Market Fill the Grill Challenge 2012 Orlando – Event Coverage

Whole Foods Market in Phillips Crossing hosted it’s “Fill The Grill Challenge” for 3 weeks in July. The challenge featured chefs from four local food trucks in the Orlando area, where they had a $20 budget, with 20 minutes to shop and then 20 minutes to cook. The chefs chose their own ingredients and were allowed to work with a pantry provided by Whole Foods. With a $20 budget, all of the chefs were able to show their creativity. Cooking 3 plates of food for the judges in 20 minutes was the real task. Like many food competition t.v. shows, the chefs had to improvise when equipment did not work in their favor and at the end of 20 minutes, some items did not make the plate. It was exciting to watch these talented chefs cook live, and it was even more exciting as I was one of the judges for this series that got to taste each dish. It was not the easiest job in the world to taste these dishes, but someone had …

TECHmunch Tampa 2012 – Conference Photos & Recap

The TECHmunch food blogger conference rolled into in Tampa, FL last month. This was my first time attending a TECHmunch event and I was excited to see this conference taking place in a nearby city. What made this conference different was that I was asked to speak at one of the segments. Jeff Houck, Food writer for the Tampa Tribune, reached out to me back in February and asked if I would be interested in speaking. After an excited and nervous initial reaction, I was honored to be asked and accepted. Later I found out I was participating on a panel, speaking on food trends and social media. Sure, I can chime in and talk in a group setting, a more ideal situation than speaking solo with a power point.   (click image to enlarge) The conference weekend started on a Friday evening with a opening reception at the Tampa Museum of Art. The event had tasty bites and desserts, along with some potent mixed drinks. A fun time for conversations, introductions and re-connecting with …

The Deep Fried Droolius – A nostalgic look at a grilled cheese from Red Eye BBQ Truck

Today is National Grilled Cheese Day so we will take a nostalgic look at a favorite grilled cheese sandwich. Last year in April 2011, a deep fried grilled cheese sandwich was born in Orlando. It was the best of three worlds: a grilled cheese sandwich, with bbq brisket, and deep fried. The sandwich was called the Deep Fried Droolius and it was from the (now retired) Red Eye BBQ Truck. The popular BBQ food truck had a “Create your Own Grilled Cheese” option and I definitely used to come up with my own concoction almost every trip. One day I asked them if they could deep fry a grilled cheese sandwich and they said, “Sure, why not?” So after creating a batter to deep fry sandwiches, the following sandwich was born:   (click image to enlarge) The Deep Fried Droolius – Red Eye BBQ house smoked brisket, bbq sauce, and cheese slices in a round bun, battered and deep fried.
