Swine & Sons Provisions Opens In Winter Park, FL

Swine & Sons Provisions is the newest concept from the Swine Family Restaurant Group, from James and Julie Petrakis, chefs and owners of The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder. Chef James describes Swine & Sons as a “neighborhood deli meets grocery store” where almost everything is made in-house or locally produced. This space specializes in a number of food options including made-to-order butcher sandwiches, takeout charcuterie, signature spices and rubs, scratch-made biscuits, daily pastry offerings, seasonally inspired homemade ice cream and much more. It’s a place where patrons can take food to-go or dine-in at a communal table or casual seating. A daily “Blue Pig Specials” menu offers to-go dinners (about 30 plates a night) that will feature signature dishes or classics, like their buttermilk fried chicken, and be accompanied by a variety of scratch-made sides. The specials menu may change weekly and is updated on Swine & Sons’ website every Monday.   (click image to enlarge) Located directly west of Cask & Larder, this is the third Winter Park location for the Petrakis’. …

National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day – Celebrate With A Rachel Sandwich At Southern Moon In Orlando

Each year on January 14, Americans celebrate National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day. In New York City, you would probably celebrate by getting a Hot Pastrami Sandwich at one of NYC’s famous delis, such as Katz’s Delicatessen (my favorite in NYC). If you’re in Orlando, FL you would go to Southern Moon and try their version of a hot pastrami sandwich: the new Rachel Sandwich featuring their house made Pastrami served on house made Rye bread. Yes, they make their own Pastrami and bake their own Rye bread, and its good. The Rachel Sandwich is part of their updated menu at Southern Moon, while still keeping their barbecue classics, and adding a few more items to round out their menu.   (click image to enlarge) Rachel Sandwich – house made Pastrami, house made sauerkraut, thousand island dressing made with local honey, Amish Swiss Cheese, grilled on house made cocoa and caraway Rye bread The Rachel Sandwich, according to Wikipedia, “is a variation on the standard Reuben sandwich, substituting pastrami for the corned beef, and coleslaw for …

Ramen at Kappo at East End Market – Orlando, FL

Kappo at East End Market is working on their own Ramen recipe, with soup broth and noodles both made from scratch. Surprised? I’m not. What can’t these guys do? No set date yet, but it’s planned to be served during cold weather, so hopefully it will be on their menu soon.   (click image to enlarge) A few weeks ago (mid-December) I was able to order one of the first bowls of Ramen made by Kappo at East End. Their menu is well known for their sushi and Omakase dinners, but they are talented in creating many types of Japanese cuisine. Their Ramen here is made from scratch, from the noodles to the pork broth, and was served in a limited quantity the day I went. Kappo’s Ramen was a bowl of house made noodles, savory pork broth, tender pork belly, earthy flavored enoki mushrooms, and a silky soft poached egg. The pickled ginger in the center cut through the richness and everything had a balance of good flavors and textures.   (click image to …

Today is the opening of the much anticipated Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa restaurant in the Mills/50 District of Orlando, FL. If you’re not familiar with Thomas, he originally opened the food truck concept of TreeHouse Truck and after making it successful, he sold it to its current owners. He then had a stint in Puerto Rico in the restaurant business and eventually came back to Orlando to open Pig Floyd’s. The kitchen is run by Chef Jason Carlucci, who worked on the TreeHouse Truck back in the day and has experience in several restaurants in the North East and in Florida. Kicking Off My Labor Day Weekend With The Shack Corn Dog At Shake Shack!

The holiday weekend is here and I finally get to try the Shack Corn Dog that I see pop up on the Shake Shack menu on every Labor Day Weekend. It’s available starting today, Friday until Monday, and only a seasonal special. I’ve been eyeing this corn dog for a while now and never seem to make it to a Shake Shack in time. Luckily there is a fairly new Shake Shack in the Orlando area and I stopped in with a friend today and we both ordered a Shack Corn Dog each.   (click image to enlarge) This is how you kick off a Labor Day Weekend! ‘Flavors of Summer’ Menu at Hemingway’s – Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress

The ‘Flavors of Summer’ menu at Hemingway’s is a celebration of island flavors in a pre fixe three-course menu. The menu has influences from author, Ernest Hemingway, with his adventures from Key West to Cuba. The menu showcases a variety of ingredients from the islands and is offered during all of August at Hemingway’s, located in the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress resort in Orlando. I attended a media dinner a few weeks ago to get a taste of the ‘Flavors of Summer’ menu on Ernest Hemingway’s actual birthday. Our group raised our glasses of the signature cocktail, the “Papa Doble”, and gave a cheers in honor of Hemingway’s birthday. We then selected our choices of the pre fixe menu and I was able to take a photo of each dish. Check out our experience below and see why the ‘Flavors of Summer’ is worth experiencing for yourself…   (click image to enlarge) Savor the flavor of the islands with Hemingway’s summer pre fixe menu at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress. Revisit To Taste of the Nation Orlando 2012

Taste of The Nation Orlando is back again this weekend on Saturday, August 9 and I wanted to share my experience from back in 2012. Consider this a Throwback Thursday post on my first Taste of the Nation from two years ago. The event is a culinary celebration and fundraising event, with ticket sales and silent auctions supporting Share Our Strength’s efforts to end childhood hunger. There are a number of restaurants who participate from around Central Florida and their chefs are on hand plating dishes. It’s fun to watch them in action as you wait in line to get a taste of their dish for the evening. An array of appetizers, entrees and desserts are available to sample, along with craft beers and wines.   (click image to enlarge) Since Taste of The Nation 2012 was my first event, I was not sure of what to expect. So I am sharing some photos here of what I have experienced for food and these are some of the returning restaurants serving at this year’s event. …

Southern Moon Smokehouse – A New Plate of BBQ in Orlando

Southern Moon Smokehouse is the new spot for barbecue in town. Recently opening in Orlando, just southeast of downtown, they are serving up a selection of smoked meats, house made BBQ sauces, craft sodas, house made breads, side dishes, and desserts. Almost the entire menu is made from scratch in their kitchen, from smoking barbecue to baking breads and desserts. Southern Moon makes their own craft sodas, infusion spirits for mixed cocktails at the bar, and they are working on craft beer too. Craft beer is coming in the next few months and should be a good pairing with their barbecue.   (click image to enlarge) The Southern Moon Smokehouse barbecue concept is by owner and chef, Bryce Balluff, who is also the creator of Fork In The Road food truck.
